My One to Ten in 2017

Time flies, 2017 has come to an end, and 2018 has arrived. Last year, I wrote an article about 2016, but this year, I become older and lazier, so I decide to do a quick review of my past year in numbers, below is my 1-10 in 2017.

  1. Together with colleagues in Huawei, started an ambitious and futuristic project
  2. Graduated two PhD students: Chua Soon Hau & Meng Xiaojun), congratulations!
  3. Given 3 keynote speeches in ACM VRST, ACM MUM, and IEEE ISCID on the next interaction paradigm & taught 3 courses: User Interface Development, Interaction Design, and Research topics in HCI.
  4. Initiated 4 exciting collaboration projects in Canada with University of Toronto and University of Waterloo!
  5. Manage to run marathon under 5 hours: I finished the Sundown Marathon in 4 hours and 46 minutes in March.
  6. Together with my excellent students and colleagues, we published/gotAccepted 6 high quality papers:
    • 2 CHI (an eyes-free word processing interface called Editalk & a study on volunteer peer learning for Dementia Patients),
    • 1 Ubicomp (with Tsinghua University on an eyes-free text input technique called BlindType)
    • 1 CSCW (on enabling complex references in MOOC environment called Korero)
    • 1 IUI (on automatic engagement measuring tool called AVEID for Dimentia Patients)
    • 1 RSS (on an novel interfaces for Flying Camera called XPose, note that RSS is a premium conference in Robotics, XPose has won the best system paper award)
  7. I spent 7 months of eyes-opening industrial attachment with the Huawei consumer group from May – December 2017.
  8. Read 8 great books,
    • The Gun, Germs and Steel [The best history book I have ever read]
    • Homo Sapien [A lighter version of the previous book, aiming to reach a wider audience]
    • The economic way of thinking [Understand how the world functions, from an economic point of view]
    • Grit: The Power of Passion and Perserverence [The high level guiding principle of work & life]
    • The Power of Full Engagement [How to balance the different kind of energy in life]
    • Never Eat Alone [The secret behind social interaction]
    • Running Revolution [How to training to run a marathon]
    • Story: substance, structure, style, and the Principles of Screenwriting [The secret behind any good Holliwood movie]
  9. Mainly stayed in 9 different cities: Shenzhen, Huizhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou in China, Singapore, Toronto, Waterloo in Canada, Gothenberg in Sweden, Stuartgart in Germany.
  10. Gain 10 pounds in weight (thanks to the delicious food and cold weather in China which makes me eat more and run less 🙁 )
